Der erste BOINC Pentathlon ist vorbei
Am 05.05.2010 startete der BOINC Pentathlon. Ein kurzer, aber intensiver Wettkampf begann, der den Teams viel abverlangte. Es ist beeindruckend zu sehen, in wie vielen Sprachen sich Menschen quer über dem Globus mit diesem Wettkampf beschäftigten:
Ein einzigartiges Event, das 2011 definitiv wiederholt wird. Am 05.05.2011 wird somit der zweite Pentathlon starten. Wir bitten alle Teilnehmer, Feedback und Vorschläge zum Pentathlon einzureichen, denn nur so können wir aus Fehlern lernen und den Wettkampf verbessern:

Top15
#15 TeAm AnandTech (13,14,25,21,7)
Zum Schluss waren sie am Besten. Platz 7 bei Rosetta katapultierte das Team dann doch noch auf #15. So konnten sie die Schlappen bei Freehal und Collatz ausgebügeln. Mit etwas mehr Konstanz wäre deutlich mehr drin gewesen.
#13 BOINC@MIXI (21,9,20,8,21)
Ihnen lagen die GPU-Projekte deutlich besser, große Leistungsschwankungen traten aber auch bei den CPU-Projekten nicht auf. So wurden sie am Ende mit dem Sprung in die Top15 belohnt.
#13 Team China (9,13,21,18,18)
Gut gestartet, doch dann an Kraft verloren. Das Team aus dem Reich der Mitte hat aber gezeigt was für ein Potential in ihnen steckt. Warum sie ausgerechnet bei den letzten 3 Disziplinen schwächelten bleibt rätselhaft. So bleibt ihnen aber ein besseres abschneiden verwehrt.
#12 TitanesDC (19,12,22,10,14)
Besonders auftrumpfen konnten TitanesDC bei den GPU-Projekten. Hier holte das Team die Big Points. Bei Einstein und Freehal hat das Team aber scheinbar noch Potential.
#11 BOINC.Italy (11,15,24,15,8)
Mit der letzten Disziplin konnte das Team aus Italien Platz 11 sichern. Die geringe Punkteausbeute bei Freehal verhinderte ein besseres Ergebnis. Die Top10 waren jedenfalls nicht allzuweit weg.
#10 Xtrem Team Boinc Addicted (12,8,15,13,13)
Auch XTBA sammelte fleißig und regelmäßig Punkte. Dies reichte am Ende für die Top10. Nicht überraschend: Milkyway war ihr bestes Projekt.
#9 Russia (8,10,8,17,16)
Gut gestartet, ging dem Team am Ende doch etwas die Puste aus. Platz 8 wäre durchaus im Bereich des möglichen gewesen, doch die schlechteren Platzierungen bei Collatz und Rosetta verhinderten dies.
#8 The Knights Who Say Ni! (10,11,13,9,10)
Kontinuierliches Punkte sammeln zeichnet die The Knights Who Say Ni! aus. Obwohl nur einmal in den Top 10 reicht es in der Endabrechnung doch zu #8. Eine Platzierung die sie in keiner Diszplin erreichten.
#7 Planet3DNow! (5,7,7,7,9)
P3D haderte am Ende wohl mit den 2 GPU-Projekten. Allerdings waren sie am Ende auch dort nicht wirklich schlecht. Ihre schlechtestes Platzierung erreichten sie dann ausgerechnet bei Rosetta, aber möglicherweise war da die Anspannung schon verflogen.
#6 Czech National Team (3,6,5,6,5)
Das Czech National Team war eine positive Überraschung des Pentathlon. Neben einem Bronzerang beim Auftakt bei Einstein zeigte man mit den weiteren Platzierungen eine solide Leistung. Es war sogar Platz 5 drin. Für den Weg zur Spitze fehlt allerdings noch ein Stück. Wenn man aber bedenkt welche Crunchbasis das Team hat wird der Wert dieser Leistung erst richtig deutlich.
#5 L’Alliance Francophone (7,4,4,4,6)
Mit den Plätzen 7,4,4,4,6 kann die L’Alliance Francophone nicht wirklich zufrieden sein. Als Mitfavorit gehandelt verspielte das Team die Siegchancen bereits in der ersten Disziplin. Nicht eine Podiumsplatzierung wurde erreicht.
#4 Team 2ch (6,3,6,3,4)
Eine sehr solide Leistung bot das japanische Team 2ch. Zwei Bronzeplätze in den Disziplinen sind ohne Zweifel ein sehr großer Erfolg und macht damit deutlich das sie mehr als nur ein WCG-Team sind.
3. Platz
Kein Gewinnerbild verfügbar. Gewinnerbild wird später eingefügt.
SETI.USA (4,2,3,5,3)
Mit 3 Podiumsplatzierungen ist SETI.USA eigentlich nicht schlecht gewesen, aber man wird in Amerika dennoch nicht zufrieden sein. Vor allem auch, weil sie keine Disziplin gewinnen konnten.
2. Platz

Electronic Sports League (ESL) (1,5,1,2,1)
Eine wohlverdienten #2 erreichte das Team ESL, am Ende wohl auch eine Überraschung mit der das Team selbst nicht gerechnet hat. Obwohl sie die meisten Disziplinen gewannen (Einstein, Freehal, Rosetta) war der Weg zum Titel versperrt. Grund dafür war der #5 bei Milkyway, der in der Endabrechnung zu schwer wog.

SETI.Germany (2,1,2,1,2)
Der Sieg geht an SETI.Germany, die mit drei zweiten Plätzen (Einstein, Freehal, Rosetta) und zwei Siegen (Milkyway, Collatz) einen hervorragenden Job machten. Denkwürdig war das Duell gegen ESL bei Collatz, das erst kurz vor Ende der Disziplin entschieden wurde.

The BOINC Pentathlon began on 05/05/2010. A short but intensive competition was begun which challenged the teams immensely. It is impressive to see in how many languages people around the globe are discussing this competition.
An unparalleled event which will definitely be repeated in 2011. Therefore, the second Pentathlon will start on 05/05/2011. We are asking all participants to send us their feedback and suggestions regarding the Pentathlon as this is the only way we can learn from our mistakes and improve the competition:

Top15
#15 TeAm AnandTech (13,14,25,21,7)
They were at their best right at the end. With 7th position at Rosetta the team was catapulted forward to #15. This enabled them to make good the duds at FreeHAL and Collatz. They could have achieved more with a little more consistency.
#13 BOINC@MIXI (21,9,20,8,21)
The GPU projects were definitely their forte, but even with the CPU projects they didn’t show any output variances. At the end they were therefore rewarded with a jump into the Top15.
#13 Team China (9,13,21,18,18)
Started well but then lost their energy. The team, usually found in the middle zone, showed nevertheless its potential. It’s a bit of a mystery why they were so weak in precisely those last 3 projects. That prevented them from reaching a better rank.
#12 TitanesDC (19,12,22,10,14)
They triumphed especially in the GPU projects. This is where the team grabbed the big points. There is further potential at Einstein and FreeHAL.
#11 BOINC.Italy (11,15,24,15,8)
The last discipline secured the team the 11th place. The low point score at FreeHAL prevented a better result. The Top10 wasn’t altogether that far away.
#10 Xtrem Team Boinc Addicted (12,8,15,13,13)
With regularity, XTBA busied themselves collecting their points. That in the end was sufficient to reach the Top10. Not surprisingly: Milkyway was their best project.
#9 Russia (8,10,8,17,16)
Despite having started well, the team lost some of their drive towards the end. Placement at #8 might have been a possibility but the poor positions at Collatz and Rosetta prevented this.
#8 The Knights Who Say Ni! (10,11,13,9,10)
Continuous collection of points marks out The Knights Who Say Ni! Even though they reached the Top10 only once, it was sufficient for #8 in the final settlement. A rank they didn’t manage to reach in any of the disciplines.
#7 Planet3DNow! (5,7,7,7,9)
P3D was probably wrangling with the 2 GPU projects at the end. Admittedly they weren’t really that bad there in the final phase. Their worst rank just happened to be at Rosetta, but maybe at that point the tension had already dissipated.
#6 Czech National Team (3,6,5,6,5)
The Czech National Team was a positive surprise at the Pentathlon. Besides a Bronze rank right at the start at Einstein their positions showed solid output throughout. Rank #5 might have been a possibility. To climb all the way to the top though, more will be required. Just looking at the crunch base of this team highlights the value of their achievement.
#5 L’Alliance Francophone (7,4,4,4,6)
L’Alliance Francophone cannot possibly be happy with their ranks of 7,4,4,4,6. As one of the favourites, the team gambled away their chance of winning in the first discipline. They never reached one podium.
#4 Team 2ch (6,3,6,3,4)
The Japanese Team 2ch showed a solid performance. Two Bronze placements in the disciplines are no doubt a very big achievement and make it clear that they are more than just a WCG-Team.

SETI.USA (4,2,3,5,3)
With 3 podium finishes SETI.USA weren’t all that bad but they won’t really be satisfied in America with that. Especially the fact that they were unable to win any of the disciplines.

Electronic Sports League (ESL) (1,5,1,2,1)
A well earned 2nd place was reached by Team ESL which possibly came as a surprise even to the team. Even though they won the most disciplines (Einstein, FreeHAL, Rosetta) they found the way to the title barred. Reason for that was their #5 rank at Milkyway which weighed too heavily in the final settlement.

SETI.Germany (2,1,2,1,2)
The win goes to SETI.Germany which did a fabulous job with three second positions (Einstein, FreeHAL, Rosetta) and two wins (Milkyway, Collatz). Most memorable was the duel with ESL at Collatz which was only decided just before the end of that discipline.

Le premier BOINC Pentathlon est fini
Le 05/05/2010 débutait le BOINC Pentathlon. C’était le début d’une brève mais intense compétition qui allait exiger beaucoup des équipes. Il est impressionnant de voir le nombre de langues dans lesquelles les hommes et les femmes à travers le monde ont discuté de cette compétition :
Un événement unique qui sera définitivement réitéré en 2011. Le deuxième Pentathlon démarrera donc le 05/05/2011. Nous prions tous les participants de soumettre leurs commentaires et des propositions pour le Pentathlon. C’est pour nous la seule manière d’apprendre de nos erreurs et d’améliorer la compétition:

Et voici la remise des prix:
Top15
#15 TeAm AnandTech (13,14,25,21,7)
C’est à la fin qu’ils étaient les meilleurs. La 7e place chez Rosetta a finalement réussi à les catapulter à la 15e place. Cela leur a permis de rattraper les bourdes de Freehal et Collatz. Avec un peu plus de constance, ils auraient pu aller beaucoup plus loin.
#13 BOINC@MIXI (21,9,20,8,21)
Ils étaient nettement plus à l’aise dans les projets GPU, mais nous n’avons pas vu de grandes variations de puissance sur les projets CPU non plus. A la fin, ils ont été récompensés par une arrivée dans le Top15.
#13 Team China (9,13,21,18,18)
Ils ont bien démarré, mais ont ensuite perdu en force. Toutefois, l’équipe de l’Empire du Milieu a montré le potentiel qu’elle avait en elle. Pourquoi elle a justement faibli lors des 3 dernières disciplines reste un mystère. Cela leur interdit l’accès à une meilleure place.
#12 TitanesDC (19,12,22,10,14)
Les TitanesDC ont pu particulièrement montrer leur supériorité dans les projets GPU. C’est là que l’équipe a fait les “Big Points”. Mais il semblerait que l’équipe a encore du potentiel sur Einstein et Freehal.
#11 BOINC.Italy (11,15,24,15,8)
Grâce à la dernière discipline, l’équipe d’Italie a pu assurer la 11e place. Le faible nombre de points sur Freehal a empêché un meilleur résultat. En tout cas, les Top10 n’étaient pas très loin.
#10 Xtrem Team Boinc Addicted (12,8,15,13,13)
XTBA a également collectionné des points avec assiduité et régularité. Finalement, ça a suffi pour le Top10. Sans surprise : Milkyway était leur meilleur projet.
#9 Russia (8,10,8,17,16)
Après un bon départ, l’équipe s’est un peu essoufflée à la fin. La 8e place aurait absolument été dans le domaine du possible, mais les mauvais classements sur Collatz et Rosetta ont empêché cela.
#8 The Knights Who Say Ni! (10,11,13,9,10)
L’accumulation continue de points distingue les Knights Who Say Ni! Bien qu’ils ne soient qu’une fois dans le Top10, cela suffit dans le calcul final pour atteindre la 8e place – un classement qu’ils n’ont atteint dans aucune discipline.
#7 Planet3DNow! (5,7,7,7,9)
P3D semble en avoir voulu aux 2 projets GPU. Pourtant, ils n’étaient pas mauvais là non plus. Ils ont obtenu leur plus mauvais classement justement sur Rosetta, mais peut-être que la tension était déjà retombée à ce moment-là.
#6 Czech National Team (3,6,5,6,5)
La Czech National Team est une surprise positive du Pentathlon. Outre la médaille de bronze lors de l’ouverture sur Einstein, elle a montré une bonne performance tout au long des classements. Elle a même réussi à atteindre la 5e place. Par contre, il en manque encore un peu sur la voie du sommet. Toutefois, quand on pense à la base de crunch de cette équipe, la valeur de cette performance saute réellement aux yeux.
#5 L’Alliance Francophone (7,4,4,4,6)
L’Alliance Francophone ne peut vraiment pas être satisfaite avec les places 7,4,4,4,6. Cotée parmi les favoris, l’équipe a perdu toute chance de victoire dès la première discipline. Elle n’a pas obtenu une seule place sur le podium.
#4 Team 2ch (6,3,6,3,4)
L’équipe japonaise Team 2ch a offert une très bonne performance. Deux médailles de bronze dans les différentes disciplines sont sans doute un très grand succès et montrent qu’elle est plus qu’une équipe de WCG.

Avec 3 places sur le podium, SETI.USA n’était pas mauvaise, mais on ne sera sûrement pas satisfait en Amérique. Surtout parce qu’ils n’ont pu gagner aucune discipline.

L’équipe ESL a obtenu une 2e place bien méritée, et c’est probablement aussi une surprise à laquelle l’équipe ne s’attendait pas. Bien qu’elle ait gagné la plupart des disciplines (Einstein, Freehal, Rosetta), l’accès au titre était bloqué. La raison en est la 5e place sur Milkyway, qui a pesé trop lourd dans la balance.

La victoire va à SETI.Germany, qui a fait du bon boulot avec trois deuxièmes places (Einstein, Freehal, Rosetta) et deux victoires (Milkyway, Collatz). Le duel avec ESL sur Collatz – qui s’est décidé à la dernière minute – fut mémorable.
