Le deuxième BOINC Pentathlon est terminé
Am 19.05.2011 ging nach zwei spannenden Wochen der zweite BOINC-Pentathlon zu Ende. In 5 Disziplinen gaben 27 Teams ihr Bestes.
Wir bedanken uns bei den Betreibern von World Community Grid, PrimeGrid, QMC@HOME, Rosetta@home und yoyo@home für die gute Verfügbarkeit ihrer Projekte. Trotz des teils mehr, teils weniger heftigen zusätzlichen Ansturms gab es nur selten kleinere Probleme.
Ebenfalls geht ein besonderer Dank an alle, die dieses Event durch ihre tatkräftige Mithilfe in verschiedensten Bereichen ermöglicht haben.
Es wart aber ihr, die Teams und ihre Mitglieder, die den Pentathlon wirklich zum Leben gebracht haben. SETI.Germany bedankt sich daher bei allen Teilnehmern und hofft, euch im nächsten Jahr ab dem 05.05.2012 beim dritten BOINC-Pentathlon wiederzusehen.

Wer bei allen Projekten auf dem Laufenden bleiben will, kann sich so die vielen einzelnen Feeds sparen.

After two exciting weeks the second BOINC Pentathlon ended on 2011/05/19. 27 teams gave it their all in 5 disciplines.
We are thanking the operators of World Community Grid, PrimeGrid, QMC@HOME, Rosetta@home and yoyo@home for making their projects available. Despite the additional demand which varied in intensity, only rarely did minor problems occur.
I’d also like to thank all those who made this event possible due to their hard work in many different areas.
But it was really you, the teams and their members, who brought the Pentathlon to life. SETI.Germany would therefore like to thank all participants and hopes to meet you again next year for the third BOINC-Pentathlon starting on 2012/05/05.

A bit of promotion for a new feature as a stopgap until the next Pentathlon: SETI.Germany has recently begun to offer news features of (nearly) all BOINC projects in bundled format either on this page, as RSS Feed or on Twitter (each in its original language but mostly in English). For those of you who want to keep up to date, it’s an improvement on all those individual feeds.

Après deux semaines passionnantes, le deuxième BOINC Pentathlon s’est terminé le 19/05/2011. Vingt-sept équipes ont donné le meilleur d’elles-mêmes dans 5 disciplines.
Nous tenons à remercier les administrateurs de World Community Grid, PrimeGrid, QMC@HOME, Rosetta@home et yoyo@home pour la bonne disponibilité de leurs projets. Malgré les assauts supplémentaires plus ou moins forts, nous n’avons rencontré que rarement de petits problèmes.
Un merci particulier à toutes celles et tous ceux qui ont rendu cet événement possible grâce à leur aide active dans les domaines les plus divers.
Mais c’était vous, les équipes et leurs membres, qui avez réellement donné vie au Pentathlon. SETI.Germany remercie donc tous les participants et espère vous revoir l’année prochaine, à partir du 05/05/2012, pour le troisième BOINC Pentathlon.

L’Alliance Francophone (WCG: 3, PG: 3, QMC: 3, Rosetta: 3, yoyo: 3)
Was soll man dazu sagen. Fünfmal Bronze sichern am Ende auch in der Gesamtwertung den Bronzeplatz. Viel hat nicht gefehlt auf Silber. Im Gegensatz zum Vorjahr haben sie sich wesentlich gesteigert, konnten aber SG nie gefährlich werden. Sie sind in der Lage zu gewinnen, konnten das aber nicht abrufen.What is there left to say? Five times Bronze was in the end sufficient to secure the Bronze Medal in the overall standings. It wouldn’t have taken much more to get the Silver. They have improved significantly compared with last year but were unable to seriously threaten SG. They are capable of winning but couldn’t put it into practice.Que dire ? Cinq fois du bronze assure finalement aussi le bronze au classement général. Il ne manquait pas grand-chose pour l’argent. Par rapport à l’année précédente, ils se sont nettement améliorés, mais ils n’ont jamais pu mettre SG en danger. Ils sont capables de gagner, mais n’ont pas su puiser dans leurs forces.

Planet 3DNow! (4,6,1,2,2)
Vor allem in der 2. Hälfte des Pentathlon zeigte P3D seine Stärke. Sie schaffen es immer wieder, ihre Leute zu begeistern und zu mobilisieren. Ob mehr drin gewesen wäre, wenn sie von Anfang an voll dabei gewesen wären, bleibt offen, ihre Schwachstelle bleiben die GPUs. Dennoch ist es toll zu sehen, dass ein vermeintlicher Außenseiter beim Pentathlon Chancen hat.P3D showed their strength mainly in the 2nd half of the Pentathlon. They are always able to fire up their people and mobilize them. It is debateable if they could have done more if they had pushed hard from the start, their weak point being the GPUs. It is therefore encouraging to see that chances can be had at the Pentathlon for an alleged outsider.P3D a montré sa force surtout dans la deuxième moitié du Pentathlon. Ils arrivent toujours à passionner et à mobiliser leurs membres. Auraient-ils pu faire mieux s’ils avaient été à fond dès le départ ? Mystère. Leur faiblesse reste le GPU. Mais c’est super de voir qu’un présumé outsider a ses chances au Pentathlon.

SETI.Germany (2,1,2,1,1)
Wie im letzten Jahr schaffte es SG, immer nur Gold und Silber abzusahnen. Von Anfang an ging man konzentriert ans Werk, was am Ende einen klaren und verdienten Triumph einbrachte. Vor allem die Stabilität ist hier als herausragend zu bezeichnen und der Grund, dass sie wieder ganz oben stehen.SG managed to creme off nothing but Gold and Silver, just like last year. They approached this task with great concentration right from the start which in the end resulted in an obviously well earned triumph. Their consistency throughout was excellent and is the reason why they are back at the top.Comme l’an dernier, SG a réussi à toujours récolter de l’or et de l’argent. Dès le départ, on s’est mis à l’ouvrage de manière concentrée, ce qui apporta finalement un triomphe clair et mérité. Il faut surtout mentionner leur excellente stabilité qui est la raison pour laquelle ils sont encore une fois en haut du podium.

4. Team 2ch (1,4,9,5,7)
Top gestartet, doch am Ende ging ihnen die Luft aus. Vor allem QMC und yoyo brachten die Japaner in arge Not, dennoch hatten sie den Top3 am Ende nichts entgegenzusetzen. Ein Sieg ist am Ende zu wenig für eine Gesamtmedaille. Die Japaner haben bei den letzten 3 Projekten ihre Siegchancen weggeschmissen, wenn es ihnen gelingt auch mal für ein paar Tage auf WCG zu verzichten, muss sich die Konkurrenz warm anziehen.Started at the top but deflated towards the end. Especially brought down by QMC and yoyo, the Japanese had nothing to throw at the Top3 towards the finish. After all, one win alone is not enough for an overall medal. The Japanese threw away their winning chances with the last 3 projects. If they are ever able to do without WCG for a few days the opposition will have to take notice.Un super départ, mais à la fin ils se sont essoufflés. Surtout QMC et yoyo ont mit les Japonais en grande difficulté. A cause de cela, ils n’avaient rien à opposer aux Top3 à la fin. Une seule victoire ne suffit pas pour une médaille globale. Sur les 3 derniers projets, les Japonais ont jeté leurs chances de victoire aux orties. S’ils arrivent à se passer de WCG pendant quelques jours, leurs concurrents auront du souci à se faire.
5. Czech National Team (6,8,7,4,4)
Im letzten Jahr standen sie noch bei einer Disziplin auf dem Stockerl, in diesem Jahr wurde daraus aber nichts. Zu stark war die Konkurrenz am Ende. Dennoch haben sie sich um einen Platz in der Endabrechnung verbessert. Das zeigt wieder, was regelmäßiges, stabiles Punkten einbringen kann. Dennoch wird es schwer für sie, noch weiter nach vorn zu kommen.Last year they managed to reach the podium in one of the disciplins but didn’t pull it off this year. The opposition was too strong towards the end. Despite this, they improved their overall position by one place in the final standings. This just shows what consistent and stable point gathering can achieve. However, it appears to be difficult for them to move up further.L’an dernier, ils ont pu monter sur le podium pour une discipline, malheureusement ce n’était pas le cas cette année. La concurrence était trop rude en fin de compte. Et pourtant, ils ont gagné une place au classement global. Cela montre une fois de plus ce que des crédits réguliers et stables peuvent rapporter. Il leur sera pourtant difficile de remonter plus avant.
6. SETI.USA (20,2,6,9,8)
WCG ließ uns schon schlimmes erahnen, doch glücklicherweise rafften sich die Amerikaner doch noch auf, um die Blamage am Ende abzuwenden. Dennoch ist #6 eine Enttäuschung. Warum sie den Start so versaut haben, ist uns unbekannt, dennoch bleiben sie außer bei PG deutlich unter ihren Möglichkeiten. Das Potential haben sie ohne weiteres, nur nutzen müssen sie es.The Americans had us all worried during WCG but luckily managed to avoid humiliation towards the end. Despite all that, #6 is disappointing. We don’t know why they made a hash of the start but except for PG they appear to underachieve. They have the potential if only they would utilise it.WCG nous a fait craindre le pire, mais heureusement, les Américains se sont repris et ont ainsi évité de se ridiculiser. Malgré cela, la 6e place est une déception. Nous ne savons pas pourquoi ils ont tellement raté le démarrage, mais – à l’exception de PG – ils restent nettement en deçà de leurs possibilités. Ils ont sans doute le potentiel, il faut juste qu’ils s’en servent.
7. BOINCstats (11,5,13,11,6)
Kontinuierliches Bunkern war ebenfalls kennzeichnend für BOINCstats. Allerdings schafften sie es nur 2mal in die Top10 und so bleibt ihnen eine bessere Platzierung am Ende verwehrt.BOINCstats were amongst those who bunkered continuously. Despite all that they only managed to reach the Top10 twice and were therefore prevented from gaining a better position in the end.Le fait de faire du cache en permanence caractérisait aussi BOINCstats. Toutefois, ils n’ont réussi que 2 fois à rentrer dans les Top10 et une meilleure place au général leur est donc interdite.
8. Team China (10,10,5,14,10)
Um fünf Plätze verbessert kann Team China sehr zufrieden mit Ergebnis sein. Auch hielten sie im Gegensatz zum Vorjahr das Tempo hoch. Sie punkteten regelmäßig und stabil, vielleicht können sie im nächsten noch 2-3 Plätze weiter vorne landen. Wenn sie sich weiter so steigern, sind sie vielleicht in einigen Jahren für Größeres ausersehen.Having improved by 5 places, Team China can be very satisfied with the result. In addition, they kept up momentum in comparison to last year. They gained points on a regular and stable basis and it is entirely possible that they can improve by 2 – 3 places next time round. If they can maintain progress they may be eligible for greater things in a few years.Team China s’est amélioré de 5 places et peut être très satisfait du résultat. Contrairement à l’année précédente, ils ont aussi gardé un rythme soutenu. Ils ont engrangé des crédits réguliers et stables. Peut-être qu’ils pourraient encore gagner 2-3 places l’année prochaine. S’ils continuent à s’améliorer ainsi, ils seront peut-être destinés à de plus grandes choses dans quelques années.
9. Ukraine (7,11,12,13,9)
Der Anfang und das Ende waren am besten. Warum das so war, ist schleierhaft. Potential steckt in diesem Team. Ansonsten recht unauffällig.Start and finish were the best. There was no explanation for it. There is potential in the team. Apart from that they had not been very noticeable.Le début et la fin étaient le mieux. Pourquoi il en était ainsi, est un mystère. Cette équipe a du potentiel. Pour le reste, elle est assez discrète.
10. BOINC Synergy (9,24,8,8,5)
Die Altmeister verschenkten eine besser Platzierung bei PG, das scheint ihre Achillesferse zu sein. Wenn dieser Ausrutscher nicht gewesen wäre, hätten sie durchaus auf #6 stehen können. Es gilt also in Zukunft mehr in GPUs zu investieren. Wozu sie in der Lage sind, zeigten sie am Ende bei yoyo.The old masters squandered a better placement with PG; that seems to be their Achilles heel. If it hadn’t been for this slip they could well have been placed at #6. As a result there should be more investment in GPUs in future. They showed their capabilities in the end with yoyo.Ces anciens champions ont raté un meilleur classement au niveau de PG qui semble être leur talon d’Achille. S’il n’y avait pas eu ce dérapage, ils auraient pu se retrouver à la 6e place. Il s’agit donc d’investir davantage dans des GPU à l’avenir. Ils ont montré de quoi ils étaient capables sur yoyo.
11. Russia (12,9,14,7,16)
Im vergangenen Jahr auf #9 müssen die Russen dem starken Feld Tribut zollen. Am Ende scheint aber die Kraft oder die Motivation gefehlt zu haben und sie verpassten so die Top10. Die Russen müssen aufpassen, ansonsten geht es im nächsten Jahr weiter nach hinten.Although placed at #9 last year the Russians paid the price for a strong field. In the end they lost either their strength or motivation and therefore missed the Top10. The Russians will have to take care or they may continue to slip further back next year.Neuvièmes l’an dernier, les Russes ont dû payer tribut à la tête du peloton cette année. Et à la fin, la puissance ou la motivation a dû manquer ce qui leur a fait rater les Top10. Les Russes doivent faire attention, sinon ils glisseront encore plus vers le bas l’an prochain.
12. BOINC.Italy (17,12,11,6,14)
Das Dutzend voll machen die Italiener und das auch verdient. Auch wenn sie bei WCG nicht voran kamen, schafften sie es, diese Scharte bei Rosetta wettzumachen.The Italians complete the dozen and they jolly well deserve it. Even though they couldn’t get going during WCG they managed to make amends with Rosetta.Pour compléter la douzaine, voici les Italiens. Ils l’ont mérité. Même s’ils n’ont pas réussi à avancer sur WCG, ils ont réussi à réparer cet échec sur Rosetta.
13. Electronic Sports League (13,13,10,15,11)
Man mag schnell glauben, dass der letztjährige Silbermedaillengewinner extrem enttäuscht sein müsste. Dem ist aber nicht so. Die Voraussetzungen für das Team waren schwierig und vor diesem Hintergrund sollte auch die Leistung eingeordnet werden. Und die ging am Ende in Ordnung. Das ist durchaus eine gute Basis für die Zukunft und vielleicht können sie im nächsten Jahr die Top10 in Angriff nehmen.At first it would appear that the silver medallists from the previous year might be extremely disappointed. But far from it. The conditions were difficult for the team and with this in mind their achievement needs to be judged accordingly. And it worked out well in the end. This is indeed a good base for the future and brings an opportunity to attack the Top10 next year.On pourrait rapidement croire que l’équipe qui a remporté la médaille d’argent l’an dernier doit être extrêmement déçue, mais ce n’est pas le cas. Les conditions étaient difficiles pour cette équipe, et c’est devant ce contexte qu’il faut également noter leur performance, qui était pas mal en fin de compte. C’est une bonne base pour l’avenir et peut-être qu’ils pourront s’attaque aux Top10 l’an prochain.
14. AMD Users (8,15,16,16,15)
Mit dem Superstart bei WCG schien es, dass sie eine Chance auf eine Platzierung in den Top10 haben würden. Aber sie konnten das Tempo nicht durchhalten. Sie crunchten im Grunde sehr unauffällig vor sich hin und stehen dank ihres guten Starts in den Top15.Judging by their brilliant start with WCG it at first appeared that they might have a chance for a place in the Top10. But they were unable to keep up momentum. They continued to crunch without drawing attention to themselves and due to their great start were placed in the Top15.Avec leur super-démarrage sur WCG, il semblait qu’ils auraient une chance d’atteindre une place dans les Top10. Malheureusement, ils n’ont pas réussi à garder le rythme. Dans le fond, ils ont crunché très discrètement et ont atteint les Top15 grâce à leur bon départ.
15. boinc.at (5,14,21,21,17)
Probleme hatten die Österreicher wohl mit dem Splitten bei den Projekten. Denn gerade da verloren sie am stärksten an Boden. Am Ende mussten sie sogar um #15 bangen, schafften es aber noch auf der Zielgeraden, ihn zu halten. Auch sie starteten super bei WCG und bauten dann massiv ab.The Austrians appeared to have difficulties in splitting the projects which lost them a lot of ground. In the end they even had to worry about #15 but managed to hold onto it on the finish line. They also had a super start with WCG but deteriorated rapidly.Les Autrichiens ont apparemment eu des problèmes avec le partage des projets : c’est là qu’ils ont perdu le plus de terrain. A la fin, ils ont même tremblé pour leur 15e place, mais ils ont réussi à la garder dans la dernière ligne droite. Eux aussi, ont super-bien démarré sur WCG et ont ensuite massivement baissé.

16. Meisterkuehler.de (15,22,4,26,13)
Ohne Zweifel die zweite große Überraschung des diesjährigen Pentathlon. Bereits bei WCG ließ das kleine Team aufhorchen und wagte dann einen mutigen Schritt, die Konzentration auf QMC. Das brachte ihnen nicht nur einen tollen 4. Platz dort ein, sondern sicherte auch gute Punkte in der Gesamtwertung. Sie zeigten damit, dass auch kleine Teams durch geschicktes und kluges taktisches Handeln Erfolge feiern können, die sich auch auf die Gesamtwertung auswirken.Without a doubt the second largest surprise at this year’s Pentathlon. The small team made us take notice of them with WCG and were then brave enough to concentrate all their efforts on QMC. Not only did that bring them a brilliant 4th place there but secured valuable points for the overall standings. They showed that with skillful and intelligent tactical action even small teams can achieve successes which have an impact on the overall result. Due to the spectacular achievement with QMC their 16th place warrants a comment.Sans aucun doute la deuxième grande surprise du Pentathlon de cette année. Déjà WCG a éveillé l’attention de cette petite équipe qui a ensuite osé une démarche courageuse : se concentrer sur QMC. Cela ne leur a pas seulement apporté une superbe 4e place sur ce projet, mais leur a également assuré des points pour le classement général. Ils nous ont ainsi montré que, grâce à une tactique habile et intelligente, même des petites équipes peuvent avoir des succès qui ont des effets sur le classement général.
