The fourth BOINC Pentathlon is over

After two exciting weeks the fourth BOINC Pentathlon ended on 2013/05/19. 36 teams gave it their all in 5 disciplines.

Many thanks to the operators of this year’s Pentathlon projects: SIMAP, World Community Grid, Einstein@Home, yoyo@home, and Asteroids@home.

SETI.Germany thanks all 36 teams and hopes to meet you again next year for the fifth BOINC Pentathlon starting on 2014/05/05.

Bronze Medal

SETI.Germany (SIMAP: 3, WCG: 4, Einstein: 2, yoyo: 4, Asteroids: 3)

At first glance, this bronze rank appears to be a disappointment for SG. But when you look closely, you see the real picture. SG haven’t failed, in fact, they might even have performed better than last year; they just couldn’t translate that into the relevant standings. Some bad luck was stuck to the soles of their running shoes which hindered them a bit. We will have to take them into account again next year, for certain.

Silver Medal

SETI.USA (2,2,4,2,6)

From the start, the Americans showed us that they meant business this year. In the end, four individual medals were not enough for Gold. It still needed a more fervent will to win. On top of that, they are very dependent on a mega-cruncher. If the Americans can succeed in motivating the bulk of their team, they’d be able to win the Pentathlon in the future.

Gold Medal

Planet 3DNow! (1,1,3,1,5)

A clear victory for the Green Planet. They built their foundations early at SIMAP which gave them the opportunity to claim victory at CEP2. Not all went smoothly as there was the obligatory slip-up, this time at Asteroid, but they were left unpunished by their opponents. P3D were also characterised by motivating a massive amount of people which left the opposition standing.

Further Placements

4th place: L’Alliance Francophone (4,5,8,3,2)
AF gave a solid performance this year, but again, it wasn’t enough for a place on the podium in the overall standings. They continue to wait for a win in a discipline even though they had their chance at yoyo this year. A bit more tactical expertise and more could be achieved. Despite that, they can be content as two individual medals are more than enough to be satisfied.

5th place: Czech National Team (5,10,6,5,1)
After the first discipline it didn’t look as if CNT would be able to come into their own. But then they concentrated on their performance capability, used their home advantage and climbed to victory at Asteroid. Thus, they were able to make good their slip-up at CEP2.

6th place: Team China (6,6,7,6,8)
A further advance for the Chinese this year. They didn’t really repeat the slip-ups of the previous year. A great Boinc-power of the future is being forged here. It remains to be seen if that will come to the fore already at next year’s Pentathlon.

7th place: Overclock.net (7,9,5,7,9)
Overclock.net were without doubt one of the positive surprises of this year’s Pentathlon. They appear to have worked intensively at eradicating their weaknesses and didn’t experience any major slip-ups this year. Rank 7 is the reward for a good and stable performance.

8th place: Team 2ch (10,3,9,9,11)
2ch appeared almost desolate this year. They started at CEP2 as absolute favourites but only came third. And for the rest, the allocated rankings were a bitter pill to swallow. We must hope for a comeback next year.

9th place: DC Russian Union (17,19,1,14,4)
Although participating for the first time, the Russian team were already causing a stir at the Pentathlon. Victory at Einstein is without doubt the crowning glory of the competition but even rank 4 at Asteroid deserves a mention. They still need to find more stability as rank 9 highlights, despite two very good results.

10th place: Electronic Sports League (9,8,10,12,7)
A solid increase in power ensured that they crunched their way into the TOP10 this year. The Silver medal winners of 2010 seem to have found their way again. There is, however, quite a lot of work to be done for the E-sports team. ESL might be able to further promote distributed computing within their ranks. They have laid the foundations at this Pentathlon.

11th place: BOINCstats (8,12,11,8,12)
A solid performance was not enough for the TOP10 this year. In order to return there, an increase will be required next year. It might be better thinking about concentrating on a single discipline, surely much more could be achieved then.

12th place: Russia (12,7,13,13,10)
At first glance they appear to have gone downhill by 4 places and they will surely be dissatisfied with that result. Russia was also a casualty of the split of resources in Russia as quite important crunchers had left the team just for the Pentathlon and changed over to DC Russian Union. Lots of potential and places were squandered.

13th place: Rechenkraft.net (13,15,16,11,16)
RKN were again able to improve performance this year and were thus rewarded with #13. Results at yoyo showed, however, that they are capable of more.

14th place: Crunching@EVGA (16,13,12,17,14)
They held their place and were not far off from #13. They were only pushed back to #14 in the last few hours. The individual results are encouraging and suggest that there might be improvement next year.

15th place: Ukraine (14,16,19,19,13)
This year, they banked on stability and did not engage in experiments. There was no place in the TOP10 for them this time round but they achieved great, solid results. Good tactics were rewarded with a good standing.

Le quatrième BOINC Pentathlon est terminé

Après deux semaines passionnantes, le quatrième BOINC Pentathlon s’est terminé le 19/05/2013. Trente-six équipes ont donné le meilleur d’elles-mêmes dans 5 disciplines.

Un grand merci aux administrateurs des projets de cette année : SIMAP, World Community Grid, Einstein@Home, yoyo@home et Asteroids@home.

SETI.Germany remercie les 36 équipes et espère vous revoir l’année prochaine, à partir du 05/05/2014, pour le cinquième BOINC Pentathlon.

Médaille de Bronze

SETI.Germany (SIMAP: 3, WCG: 4, Einstein: 2, yoyo: 4, Asteroids: 3)

Au premier coup d’oeil, cette médaille de bronze est une déception pour SG. Mais en y regardant de plus près, il faut relativiser. SG n’a pas échoué, au contraire, elle était certainement même meilleure que l’an dernier, mais elle n’a pas réussi à le transposer en classements. Et elle avait certainement un peu de poisse collée aux semelles. Il faudra par contre compter avec cette équipe l’an prochain.

Médaille d’Argent

SETI.USA (2,2,4,2,6)

Dès le départ, les Américains ont clairement fait comprendre qu’ils ne plaisantaient pas. Quatre médailles individuelles ne suffisent cependant pas pour l’or à la fin. Il manque encore la dernière volonté de vaincre. A cela s’ajoute le fait que l’équipe est très dépendante d’un gros cruncheur. Si les Américains arrivent à davantage réveiller la grande masse de l’équipe, ils pourront aussi gagner le Pentathlon à l’avenir.

Médaille d’Or

Planet 3DNow! (1,1,3,1,5)

Une victoire très nette pour la Planète Verte. Elle en a posé les bases très tôt grâce à une grande avance sur SIMAP qui leur a permis d’engranger une victoire sur CEP2. Mais cette année aussi, la gaffe obligatoire, cette fois sur Asteroids, est restée impunie par la concurrence. Cette année encore, P3D s’est surtout caractérisée par le fait qu’elle a réussi à mobiliser massivement des gens et donc à semer la concurrence.

Les autres places

4^e place : L’Alliance Francophone (4,5,8,3,2)
Une bonne performance de l’AF n’a encore pas suffi pour une place sur le podium au classement général cette année. Elle continue à attendre une victoire dans une discipline, bien qu’elle aurait été possible sur yoyo cette année. Un peu plus d’adresse tactique et il y a plus à en tirer. Elle peut toutefois être satisfaite, car deux médailles individuelles sont plus d’une raison d’être satisfait.

5^e place : Czech National Team (5,10,6,5,1)
Après la première discipline, on n’aurait pas dit que CNT pourrait faire des étincelles lors de ce Pentathlon. Mais ensuite, elle s’est concentrée sur sa puissance et a couronné cela par une victoire sur Asteroids où elle a pu profiter de l’avantage de jouer sur son terrain. Cela lui a également permis de rattraper sa bavure sur CEP2. La raison pour le mauvais départ sur CEP2 était le fait qu’elle avait encore des ressources sur un challenge Primegrid au début. S’il n’y avait pas eu ce challenge, elle aurait pu faire pression sur l’AF.

6^e place : Team China (6,6,7,6,8)
Cette année encore, les Chinois ont pu progresser. Il n’y a pas eu de réelles gaffes comme l’an dernier. Ici se construit une vraie puissance Boinc du futur. Reste à voir si nous le ressentirons déjà l’année prochaine à l’occasion du Pentathlon.

7^e place : Overclock.net (7,9,5,7,9)
Sans aucun doute, l’une des surprises positives de ce Pentathlon était Overclock.net. On a dû travailler très intensément ses faiblesses, car il n’y a pas eu de réelles gaffes cette année. La 7^e place couronne une excellente performance, très stable.

8^e place : Team 2ch (10,3,9,9,11)
2ch s’est présentée cette année de manière presque désolante. Partie comme favori absolu sur CEP2, elle n’est arrivée que troisième. Et même les autres classements obtenus sont une pilule difficile à avaler. Espérons une résurrection l’année prochaine.

9^e place : DC Russian Union (17,19,1,14,4)
Première participation, et déjà cette équipe de tête russe a remué le Pentathlon. La victoire sur Einstein est sans aucun doute le couronnement de la compétition, mais il ne faut pas non plus oublier la 4^e place sur Asteroids. Pour l’instant, l’équipe manque encore de stabilité, ce qui explique la 9^e place malgré les deux excellents résultats.

10^e place : Electronic Sports League (9,8,10,12,7)
Grâce à une bonne augmentation de sa puissance, elle a réussi à entrer dans le TOP10 cette année. Le gagnant de la médaille d’argent de 2010 a donc repris un bon chemin. Pourtant, les sportifs électroniques ont encore beaucoup de travail devant eux. Peut-être arriveront-ils à refaire avancer le calcul distribué au sein d’ESL. Les fondations ont été jetées avec ce Pentathlon.

11^e place : BOINCstats (8,12,11,8,12)
Une bonne performance n’a pas suffi pour le TOP10 cette année. Pour pouvoir y retourner, il faudra augmenter la puissance l’an prochain. Peut-être l’équipe devrait-elle songer à se concentrer sur une discipline en particulier, elle aurait sûrement beaucoup à gagner.

12^e place : Russia (12,7,13,13,10)
A première vue, l’équipe a perdu 4 places et ne devrait donc pas être satisfaite. Mais Russia a été une victime de la scission des ressources en Russie, car surtout des cruncheurs importants ont quitté l’équipe spécialement pour le Pentathlon et ont rejoint DC Russian Union. On a fait cadeau de beaucoup de potentiel et de places.

13^e place : Rechenkraft.net (13,15,16,11,16)
RKN a encore réussi à s’améliorer cette année et a été récompensée par la 13^e place. La performance sur yoyo montre, par contre, qu’il y a encore plus de capacités.

14^e place : Crunching@EVGA (16,13,12,17,14)
Elle maintient sa position et il ne manquait pas grand-chose pour la 13^e place. Elle n’a été reléguée au rang #14 que dans les dernières heures. Cependant, les résultats individuels encouragent et donnent à penser qu’une progression pourrait être possible l’an prochain.

15^e place : Ukraine (14,16,19,19,13)
Cette année, elle a misé sur la stabilité et renoncé aux expériences. Elle n’a pas obtenu de place dans le Top10, comme l’an dernier, mais de bons résultats stables. C’était une bonne tactique qui a été récompensée par un bon classement.

Der vierte BOINC-Pentathlon ist beendet

Am 19.05.2013 ging nach zwei spannenden Wochen der vierte BOINC-Pentathlon zu Ende. In 5 Disziplinen gaben 36 Teams ihr Bestes.

Bronzemedaille

SETI.Germany (SIMAP: 3, WCG: 4, Einstein: 2, yoyo: 4, Asteroids: 3)

Auf den ersten Blick ist dieser Bronzerang eine Enttäuschung für SG. Aber beim genaueren Hinsehen muss man das relativieren. SG ist nicht gescheitert, sondern insgesamt wahrscheinlich sogar besser gewesen als im Vorjahr, konnte das aber nicht in Platzierungen umsetzen. Und etwas Pech hatte sie wohl auch an den Schuhsohlen kleben. Für das nächsten Jahr werden wir aber mit ihnen rechnen müssen.

Silbermedaille

SETI.USA (2,2,4,2,6)

Von Anfang an machten die Amerikaner deutlich das sie es in diesem Jahr ernst meinen. Vier Einzelmedaillen reichen aber am Ende nicht für Gold. Hier fehlt noch der letzte Siegeswille. Dazu kommt, das man sehr auf einen Großcruncher angewiesen ist. Wenn es denn Amerikanern gelingt mehr die Masse des Teams zu aktivieren, können sie den Pentathlon in Zukunft auch gewinnen.

Goldmedaille

Planet 3DNow! (1,1,3,1,5)

Ein deutlicher Sieg für den grünen Planeten. Sie legten den Grundstein bereits frühzeitig durch einen großen Vorsprung bei SIMAP, der ihnen die Möglichkeit gab bei CEP2 einen Sieg einzufahren. Aber auch in diesem Jahr blieb der obligatorische Ausrutscher, dieses Mal bei Asteroid, durch die Konkurrenz ungestraft. P3D zeichnete sich auch in diesem Jahr vor allem dadurch aus, das sie es schafften massiv Leute zu aktivieren und damit die Konkurrenz abzuhängen.

Die weiteren Platzierungen

4. Platz: L’Alliance Francophone (4,5,8,3,2)
Eine solide Leistung der AF reichte dieses Jahr wieder nicht zu einem Podiumsplatz in der Gesamtabrechnung. Auf einen Sieg bei einer Disziplin müssen sie weiterhin warten, obwohl das in diesem Jahr bei yoyo drin gewesen wäre. Etwas mehr taktisches Geschick und es ist mehr drin. Dennoch kann man zufrieden sein, denn zwei Einzelmedaillen sind mehr als ein Grund zufrieden zu sein.

5. Platz: Czech National Team (5,10,6,5,1)
Nach der ersten Disziplin sah es nicht so aus, als könnte CNT bei diesem Pentathlon etwas reißen. Aber dann konzentrierten sie sich auf ihr Leistungsvermögen und krönten das mit einem Sieg bei Asteroid und konnten so ihren Heimvorteil nutzen. Dadurch konnte sie auch den Patzer bei CEP2 ausmerzen. Das sie am Anfang noch Ressourcen bei einer PG-Challenge hatten, war die Ursache für den schlechten Start bei CEP2. Wenn dieser nicht gewesen wäre, hätten sie AF unter Druck setzen können.

6. Platz: Team China (6,6,7,6,8)
Auch in diesem Jahr konnten sie sich die Chinese steigern. Wirkliche Ausrutscher wie im vergangenen Jahr gab es in diesem Jahr nicht. Hier baut sich eine echte Boinc-Macht der Zukunft auf. Ob wir das im nächsten Jahr zum Pentathlon schon zu spüren bekommen werden bleibt abzuwarten.

7. Platz: Overclock.net (7,9,5,7,9)
Eine der positiven Überraschungen des diesjährigen Pentathlons war zweifelsohne Overclock.net. Hier hat man wohl sehr intensiv an den Schwächen gearbeitet, denn echte Ausrutscher waren in diesem Jahr nicht dabei. Platz 7 krönt eine sehr gute und stabile Leistung.

8. Platz: Team 2ch (10,3,9,9,11)
Fast schon desolat präsentierte sich in diesem Jahr 2ch. Bei CEP2 als absoluter Favorit an den Start gegangen wurde sie dort nur Dritter. Und auch sonst sind die eingefahrenen Platzierungen eine bitter Pille. Hoffen wir für das nächsten Jahr auf eine Wiederauferstehung.

9. Platz: DC Russian Union (17,19,1,14,4)
Das erste Mal dabei und schon mischte das russische Dachteam den Pentathlon auf. Der Sieg bei Einstein ist zweifelsohne die Krönung des Wettbewerbs, aber auch Platz 4 bei Asteroid sollte nicht unerwähnt bleiben. Noch fehlt es dem Team an Stabilität, was trotz der beiden sehr guten Ergebnisse Platz 9 erklärt.

10. Platz: Electronic Sports League (9,8,10,12,7)
Mit einer ordentlichen Steigerung schafften sie es sich in diesem Jahr unter die TOP10 zu crunchen. Der Silbermedaillen-Gewinner von 2010 ist damit wieder auf einem guten Weg. Dennoch liegt viel Arbeit vor den E-Sportlern. Und vielleicht gelingt es, das verteilte Rechnen innerhalb der ESL wieder voranzubringen. Die Basis hat man mit diesem Pentathlon gelegt.

11. Platz: BOINCstats (8,12,11,8,12)
Eine solide Leistung reichte in diesem Jahr nicht für die TOP10. Um dorthin zurückzukehren muss im nächsten Jahr eine Steigerung her. Vielleicht sollte man sich mal überlegen sich auf eine bestimmte Disziplin zu konzentrieren, da wäre sicher viel drin.

12. Platz: Russia (12,7,13,13,10)
Auf den ersten Blick hat man sich um 4 Plätze verschlechtert und damit müsste man unzufrieden sein. Russia wurde aber ein Opfer der Spaltung der Ressourcen in Russland, denn vor allem wichtige Cruncher verließen das Team extra für den Pentathlon und sind zu DC Russian Union gewechselt. Hier wurde viel Potential und auch Platzierungen verschenkt.

13. Platz: Rechenkraft.net (13,15,16,11,16)
RKN konnte sich in diesem Jahr wieder steigern und wurde mit #13 belohnt. Die Leistung bei yoyo zeigt aber, das noch mehr drin ist.

14. Platz: Crunching@EVGA (16,13,12,17,14)
Platz gehalten und es fehlte nicht viel auf #13. Erst in den letzten Stunden wurden sie wieder auf #14 zurückgeschoben. Die Einzelergebnisse machen aber Mut, das es im nächsten Jahr weiter nach vorne gehen könnte.

15. Platz: Ukraine (14,16,19,19,13)
In diesem Jahr setzte man auf Stabilität und verzichtete auf Experimente. Ein Top10-Platz wie im letzten Jahr gab es dieses Jahr nicht, aber gute und stabile Ergebnisse. Das war eine gute Taktik, die mit einer guten Platzierung belohnt wurde.

Hence, SETI.Germany receives 80 points for the overall rankings and the bronze medal in this discipline.

Gold Medal

Winner of the marathon discipline with 10,020,205 credits:

BOINC-Pentathlon: Hourly export of WCG-CEP2

Because of fairness, we have to inform you, that the techs of the World Community Grid made an hourly export of the Clean Energy Project-Phase 2 for the participating teams.

We are not able to integrate this export in our stats, because there is not enough time to implement this in our productive stats environment and testing.
The xml-export is available at: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/download/teamStatPent.xml

Those export will be updated every hour between xx:55 and xx:10, except during the daylie stats-update of the database on WCG at “midnight” UTC.
It provides with the daylie increase of points, runtime and results in relation to the midnight-update of all participating teams on the CEP2-subproject.

BOINC-Pentathlon: Exportation toutes les heures de WCG-CEP2
Pour des raisons de fair-play, nous souhaitons vous informer que les techniciens du World Community Grid ont mis en place une exportation toutes les heures pour le sous-projet Clean Energy Project – Phase 2.

Malheureusement, compte tenu du peu de temps qui reste, il ne nous est plus possible d’intégrer cet export dans les statistiques du Pentathlon et de le tester.

L’exportation est effectuée toutes les heures, entre xxh55 et xxh10, à l’exception de l’heure de la mise à jour nocturne des statistiques chez WCG à “minuit”.
Elle contient l’augmentation des points WCG, de la durée et du nombre de résultats par rapport à la “mise à jour de minuit” de toutes les équipes participantes.

BOINC-Pentathlon: Stündlicher Export von WCG-CEP2

Aus Gründen der Fairness möchten wir Euch darüber informieren, dass die Techniker des World Community Grids einen stündlichen Export für das Unterprojekt Clean Energy Project – Phase 2 eingerichtet haben.

Leider ist es uns aufgrund der kurzen Zeit nicht mehr möglich, diesen in die Pentathlon-Statistiken einzubinden.
Dieser Export ist unter folgender URL abrufbar: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/download/teamStatPent.xml

Der Export findet stündlich in der Zeit von xx:55 bis xx:10 statt. Ausgenommen ist die Stunde des nächtlichen Statistik-Updates beim WCG um “Mitternacht” UTC-Zeit.
Er beinhaltet die Steigerung der WCG-Punkte, Laufzeit und Ergebnissanzahl in Bezug auf das “Mitternachts-Update” aller beteiligten Teams beim CEP2-Unterprojekt.
