BOINC-Pentathlon 2012

Der BOINC Pentathlon ist bei den Top10 Teams der BOINC-Welt zu einem festen Termin im Kalender geworden. Warum? Weil der Wettkampf für Spannung sorgt, den Teams taktisch viel abverlangt, jedes Team für Überraschungen sorgen kann (ich erinnere an den vierten Platz von meisterkuehler.de bei QMC 2011) und sich die Teams in den fünf Disziplinen des BOINC Pentathlons nichts schenken.

2011 und 2010 konnte unser Team die Pentathlon Gesamtwertung knapp gewinnen, musste sich dafür jedoch mächtig strecken: im ersten Jahr war es die starke Gamer Community ESL, die ihre Mitglieder mit Foren-Awards motivieren konnte. Im letzten Jahr wuchsen Planet 3DNow! über sich hinaus und belegten den zweiten Platz. Eine Überraschung bei dem Teilnehmerfeld: SETI.USA, L'Alliance Francophone, Team 2ch und Czech National Team liegen in der BOINC-weiten Teamwertung eigentlich vor Planet 3DNow!

Was wird in diesem Jahr passieren? Wird Sicituradastra erstmals teilnehmen und gleich gewinnen? Schließlich haben sie BOINC-weit einen fast doppelt so hohen Output wie SETI.Germany. Konzentrieren sich unsere französischen Freunde von L'Alliance Francophone voll auf den Pentathlon, um ihre Historie bei dem Wettkampf aufzupolieren? Ein fünfter und dritter Platz ist für dieses Team zu wenig. Ist SETI.USA zu alter Stärke gelangt und will den sechsten Platz aus dem letzten Jahr vergessen machen?

Wir setzen unseren 2010 gestarteten BOINC-Pentathlon auch 2012 fort.

Wie im antiken Griechenland, so wird auch der BOINC-Pentathlon in 5 Disziplinen bestritten
d.h. innerhalb von 2 Wochen werden 5 verschiedene BOINC Projekte 5 Tage lang gerechnet.

  • Physik & Chemie (CPU)
  • Showbag

Das Team, welches in allen Disziplinen zusammen die meisten Punkte holt, gewinnt den BOINC-Pentathlon.

Team SETI.Germany continues its new challenge and invites all BOINC Teams to participate in the 3rd BOINC PENTATHLON,
following the ideals of the ancient Greek Pentathlon.

I have just been told the very good news that Rosetta@home will be the first project of the BOINC pentathlon, and would like to thank
all of the participating teams. I also just learned from the discussion thread that Rosetta@home will be the project of the month
for BOINC synergy-this is more excellent news!!
Your increased contributions to rosetta@home could not come at a better time! We've been testing our improved structure prediction methodology
in a recently started challenge called CAMEO. For most of the targets, the Rosetta@home models are extremely good, but for a minority of targets the
predictions are not good at all. We've now tracked down the source of these failures and it is what we are calling "workunit starvation"
in the limited amount of time the Rosetta server has to produce models (2-3 days) in these cases very few models were made-this happens because many
targets are being run on the server so that only a fraction of your cpu power is focused on any one target. while we are working to fix this internally,
by far the best solution is to have more total CPU throughput so each target gets more models.
You can follow how we are doing at http://www.cameo3d.org/. You will see that Robetta is one of the few servers whose name is not kept secret-this
is because Rosetta is a public project. Our server receives targets from CAMEO and soon CASP, sends the required calculations out to your computers
through Rosetta@home, and then processes the returned results and submits the lowest energy models.
We are excited that the workunit starvation problem may go away through your increased efforts for Rosetta@home. Thanks!!!

Collatz has been chosen as the GPU project for the 2012 BOINC Pentathlon hosted by SETI.Germany.
The competition will run from May 7 to May 12. For more information,
please visit the official Pentathlon web site.

08.05.2012 - Beim WCG ist man auf den Pentathlon vorbereitet

We are ready. We have upgraded a lot of components in the system since last year including: adding more RAM on all the servers,
adding addition servers to environment, upgrading from MySQL 5.0 -> MySQL 5.5, doing some significant tuning on MySQL,
upgrading to the latest BOINC server code, etc.
We also "accidentally" ran a stress test on the whole system last month that allowed us to tune and
demonstrate that the system can handle at least up to 1.5 million results per day.
We appreciate your selecting us to help us further stress test the environment.
Since the nature of the challenge overall is to generate points in the competition, I would participants to select multiple projects (at least 3-4)
to ensure that any short term disruption on a single project doesn't inhibit their ability to fetch work.
As far as GPU work goes. We may have another round of beta testing during the challenge. However, we are waiting for a review of some data by
the researchers. If that is completed, we may be able to run some GPU work. If we are REALLY REALLY lucky and the next beta goes well,
then we will run a scaled up beta as we will be nearing acceptance of the application. There are a lot of things that have to go well for that to
happen though so we will wait and see. Your competitors should be aware though that it will be a beta test and so unexpected things are likely to
happen (and additional steps are required to sign up).

Team SETI.Germany setzt in diesem Jahr seinen neuartigen Wettbewerb fort und lädt alle Boinc-Teams herzlich zum 3. BOINC PENTATHLON ein.
Vorbild ist der Fünfkampf aus der Antike.

[B]Start ist wieder der 05.05.2012 (00.00 Uhr UTC) und Ende am - 18.05.2012 (23.59 Uhr UTC).[/B]

Wie im antiken Griechenland, so wird auch der BOINC Pentathlon in 5 verschiedenen Disziplinen stattfinden. Das heißt innerhalb von 14 Tagen werden 5 verschiedene Projekte 5 Tage lang gecruncht - Projekte finden also auch zeitgleich statt.

Jedes Team, das am BOINC Pentathlon teilnehmen möchte, muss sich auf [URL=http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php?&lang=de]dieser[/URL] Seite anmelden (bis zum 27.04.12 möglich)
Auch in diesem Jahr könnt ihr Euren Favoriten in der jeweiligen Disziplin bestimmen. Das Projekt, welches am meisten vorgeschlagen wird, wird dann auch gerechnet.

Eine Auflistung einiger möglicher Projekte findet ihr [URL=http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/25_de_Disziplinen.html]hier[/URL], aber ihr könnt natürlich auch Projekte vorschlagen die nicht in der Auflistung stehen. Aber bitte darauf achten, ob das ausgewählte Projekt den Ansturm durch den Boinc-Pentathlon auch aushalten kann.
