Day 3 – 07 May 2023 – As the Javelin Flies

Two eyes are fixed on the target. Highly focused. Even the own breath seemed to be roaringly loud and to drown out the rustling of the grass. The eyes wandered away from the target, toward bushes not far from him. Well camouflaged and almost motionless, his eyes could see others like him. Their eyes were focused on the gigantic animal, too.

The dense fur moved slightly in the gentle wind, and the huge tusks gave a majestic aura to the creature. The big brown animal had no idea yet what was about to happen. The two eyes looked down at his hands, where his weapon rested. Soon it would begin. Any moment now. Was the animal getting nervous? A look to the leader. The wind picked up. There came the signal…

Thousands of years ago, our ancestors lay in wait. Whether in the steppes of Africa, the grasslands of Europa, or on the coasts of the Mediterranean. Their eyes fixed on their prey, and probably most of the time in their hands: a spear. Initially used primarily for stabbing or even thrown at short distances, its range increased over time. A lighter version, the javelin, became part of the classical pentathlon in ancient Greece, and a few years ago also of the BOINC Pentathlon.

Today, it is no longer about fighting off bears or big cats. Killing mammoths has become somewhat difficult as well. Nevertheless, there are parallels. Skillfulness, strength, and speed are just as important as they were back then. Using exactly the right force at the right time is still as crucial today.

Javelin Throw (SRBase: all subprojects except TF)
The first throw is up today. However, the true potential will only be seen after the third throw. Until then, we perfectly analyze and speculate. Currently, it looks like many teams are skipping the first attempt, but the day is not over yet.

At least P3D have set an exclamation mark as they made a serious attempt. However, the current attempts by CNT (#2) and B@P (#3) suggest that there is still a lot of room for improvement.

MK (#4) also took the first attempt seriously, and it already looks pretty good. TAAT (#5) appears to skip this throw, while it remains to be seen whether this is also the case for EVGA (#6) and BOINC.Italy (#7). Both are on a quite solid track. Behind them, AF (#8) and RKN (#9) suggest that they are still gambling. Both teams can do better than they have shown so far.

I cannot tell yet how to rate TSBT (#10). Is their current result good or not? We will see. AMD Users (#11) and BC (#12) also benefit from the fact that teams such as SG (#13) do not put all cards on the table yet.

While Crystal Dream (#14) are still quite good, LTT (#15), OCN (#16), TC (#17), and [H] (#18) still have a lot of room for improvement. You see, dear readers, there will still be a lot of movement here.

In contrast, UBT (#19), Russia (#20), TFFE (#21), and BS (#22) are already at risk to lose contact. SUSA is still in #23, which may indicate that they are skipping this throw. This seems to be true for all the teams behind them, as well.

While Ukraine (#24) and PiGyS (#25) at least let toddlers throw, 2ch, GPUUG, B^S, LITOMYSL, and Chinese Dream appear to be allergic to javelins. However, every one of these teams has the potential to throw for a mid-tier ranking.

So it is clear that nothing at all is clear yet. We will know more tomorrow. On the one hand, we will have today's results, on the other hand, the second throw is already up tomorrow, and one or the other team will certainly risk coming out from under cover.

Overall Standings
Now that two disciplines are underway, we can also have a look at the overall standings. Of course, they are not very meaningful yet, but I will risk a short look at them anyway.

P3D can enjoy the foremost position at least for a while, but they benefit from the fact that TAAT (#2) and SG (#4) have not yet delivered countable results with the javelin today. CNT (#3) is doing well in both disciplines and is, in consequence, on the podium.

B@P (also #4) would probably be very satisfied with this rank in the end, as would MK (#6). AF (#7) and RKN (#8) are also in familiar territory. [H] (#10) can do better, whereas BOINC.Italy (#11), LTT (#12), EVGA (#13), and AMD Users (#14) meet frequently meet each other in the rankings.

The trio behind has to be expected to jump up the rankings, at least on paper. To what extent TC (#14), SUSA (#15), and TSBT (#16) can live up to this expectation remains an open question. They are followed by GPUUG (#17), OCN (#18), BC (#19), and Ukraine in #20.

Crystal Dream (#21), UBT (#22), TFFE (#23), Russia (#24), LITOMYSL (#24), Chinese Dream (#26), BS (#27), PiGyS (#28), B^S (#29), and 2ch (#30) is only a snapshot for now. The gaps are not big here and movements can happen quickly.

In any case, for the teams that skip the javelin throw today, that result will not be discarded from the overall standings before the fourth throw at the earliest. This means for their competitors to watch carefully.

Obstacle Run (yoyo@home: only subprojects ECM, ECM P2)
As I wrote in my preview, I will focus on two rankings each day. However, thanks to our hard-working shka, I can at least present you the winners and losers of the last hours at the Obstacle Run (from yesterday, 11:00 UTC, until today, 10:00 UTC).

Jour 3 – 07/05/2023 – Tel le vol du javelot

Deux yeux fixement dirigés sur la cible. Il était pleinement concentré. Même son souffle semblait un hurlement qui couvrait le bruissement de l'herbe. Les yeux s'éloignaient de la cible pour aller vers les buissons proches de lui. Les yeux ont détectés d'autres comme lui, bien camouflés et presque immobiles. Leur regard était également focalisé sur l'immense animal devant eux.

La fourrure dense bougeait doucement dans la brise et les énormes défenses conféraient une aura majestueuse à la bête. Le grand animal brun ne soupçonnait pas encore ce qui allait se passer sous peu. Les deux yeux descendaient sur ses mains dans lesquelles reposait son arme. Cela allait arriver d'un instant à l'autre. L'animal devenait-il nerveux? Un regard vers le meneur. Le vent se leva. Le voilà, le signal…

Il y a des milliers d'années, nos ancêtres se mettaient à l'affût. Que ce soit dans les steppes d'Afrique, les prairies d'Europe ou sur les côtes méditerranéennes. Le regard fixement tourné sur leur proie et dans la main, la plupart du temps, un javelot. Au début, il servait davantage à donner des coups ou à être lancé sur de courtes distances. Au fil du temps, la portée a été améliorée. Dans la Grèce antique, il devint une épreuve du Pentathlon classique et, depuis quelques années, il fait aussi partie du BOINC Pentathlon.

Aujourd'hui, il ne s'agit plus de se défendre contre des ours ou de grands félins. Il est aussi devenu plus difficile de tuer des mammouths. Et pourtant il existe des parallèles: l'adresse, la puissance et la vitesse sont tout aussi importantes qu'à l'époque. Comme par le passé, il est décisif d'appliquer la bonne force au bon moment.

Lancer de Javelot (SRBase: tous les sous-projets sauf TF)
Aujourd'hui, c'est le premier lancer. Mais nous ne verrons le véritable potentiel qu'après la troisième tentative. D'ici là, nous aurons de superbes occasions d'analyse et de spéculation. Pour l'heure, on dirait bien que de nombreuses équipes laissent passer ce premier lancer - mais la journée n'est pas encore terminée.

Au moins, P3D a donné le ton et a fait une tentative sérieuse. Mais les lancers actuels de CNT (#2) et B@P (#3) laissent déjà deviner qu'il y a une grande marge de progression.

MK (#4) ont également pris ce premier lancer au sérieux; ça a l'air de bien se passer. TAAT (#5) semble faire l'impasse, c'est ce qu'il reste encore à voir pour EVGA (#6) et BOINC.Italy (#7). Les deux sont tout à fait solides. Derrière, l'AF (#8) et RKN (#9) donnent à penser qu'elles jouent encore au poker. Les deux équipes sont capables de plus que ce qu'elles montrent jusqu'à présent.

Je ne saurai dire où je dois classer TSBT (#10). L'état actuel est-il bon ou pas bon? Nous verrons bien. AMD Users (#11) et BC (#12) profitent aussi du fait que des équipes, telles que SG (#13), ne donnent pas encore tout.

Tandis que Crystal Dream (#14) ne progresse pas si mal, LTT (#15), OCN (#16), TC (#17) et [H] (#18) ont encore de la marge de progression. Vous voyez, chers lecteurs, chères lectrices, qu'il y aura encore beaucoup de mouvements ici.

UBT (#19), Russia (#20), TFFE (#21), BS (#22), en revanche, doivent faire attention à ne pas perdre le contact. Au rang 23, nous trouvons encore SUSA, ce qui indique qu'elle fait l'impasse aujourd'hui. Cela semble aussi s'appliquer à toutes les autres équipes qui suivent.

Tandis que l'Ukraine (#24) et PiGyS (#25) ont au moins laissé lancer des enfants en bas âge, 2ch, GPUUG, B^S, LITOMYSL et Chinese Dream ont apparemment une allergie au javelot. Mais chacune de ces équipes a le potentiel de lancer au moins jusqu'au milieu du terrain.

Il est donc clair que rien n'est clair. Demain, nous en saurons davantage. D'une part, avec le résultat d'aujourd'hui, d'autre part, parce que demain c'est déjà le deuxième lancer et qu'il devrait amener certaines équipes à se découvrir.

Classement général
Comme nous avons maintenant deux disciplines en cours, nous pouvons aussi regarder le classement général. Naturellement, il n'est pas encore très parlant, mais je risque quand même un œil.

P3D peut se réjouir, au moins brièvement, de la place au soleil, mais elle profite du fait que TAAT (#2) et SG (#4) n'ont encore rien fourni de valable au Lancer de javelot aujourd'hui. CNT (#3) progresse bien dans les deux disciplines et se trouve donc à juste titre sur le podium.

B@P (également 4e) serait sûrement très contente de ce classement à la fin, tout comme MK (#6). L'AF (#7) et RKN (#8) avancent aussi en terrain connu. [H] (#10) est capable de plus, tandis que BOINC.Italy (#11), LTT (#12), EVGA (#13) et AMD Users (#14) se rencontrent assez souvent dans le tableau de classement.

Pour le trio qui se trouve derrière, il faut s'attendre à voir un bond en avant - au moins sur le papier. Dans quelle mesure TC (#14), SUSA (#15) et TSBT (#16) combleront ces attentes, reste encore à voir. Suivent GPUUG (#17), OCN (#18), BC (#19) et l'Ukraine au rang 20.

Crystal Dream (#21), UBT (#22), TFFE (#23), Russia (#24), LITOMYSL (#24), Chinese Dream (#26), BS (#27), PiGyS (#28), B^S (#29) et 2ch (#30) ne sont actuellement qu'un instantané. Les écarts ne sont pas très grands et des déplacements peuvent apparaître rapidement.

En revanche, pour les équipes qui font l'impasse aujourd'hui, le résultat du jour au Javelot sortira du classement général au plus tôt avec la quatrième tentative. Il s'agit donc pour la concurrence d'y regarder de près.

Course d'obstacles (yoyo@home: uniquement les sous-projets ECM, ECM P2)
Comme je l'ai écrit dans mon compte-rendu d'ouverture, je me concentre chaque jour sur deux classements. Mais grâce à notre infatigable shka, je peux au moins vous présenter les gagnants et les perdants des dernières heures (hier 13h00-aujourd'hui 12h00 CEST) à la Course d'obstacles.

Tag 3 – 07.05.2023 – Wie der Speer fliegt

Zwei Augen sind fest auf das Ziel gerichtet. Hochkonzentriert. Selbst der eigene Atem mutete brüllend laut an und schien das Rauschen des Grases zu übertönen. Die Augen wanderten weg vom Ziel, hin zu Sträuchern, nicht weit von ihm. Gut getarnt und fast bewegungslos konnten die Augen Andere wie ihn sehen. Auch ihr Blick war auf das riesige Tier vor ihnen fokussiert.

Das dichte Fell bewegte sich fein im seichten Wind und die riesigen Stoßzähne gaben dem Wesen eine majestätische Aura. Noch ahnte das große, braune Tier nicht, was gleich geschehen würde. Die beiden Augen schauten hinunter auf seine Hände, wo seine Waffe ruhte. Gleich würde es losgehen. Jeden Augenblick ist es soweit. Wurde das Tier nervös? Ein Blick zum Anführer. Der Wind frischte auf. Da war es, das Signal…

Vor tausenden Jahren legten sich unsere Vorfahren auf die Lauer. Ob in den Steppen Afrikas, den Graslandschaften Europas oder an den Küsten des Mittelmeers. Den Blick fest auf ihre Beute gerichtet und wohl meist in der Hand: ein Speer. Anfänglich mehr zum Stoßen oder auch nur Werfen auf kurze Distanzen, wurde im Lauf der Zeit die Reichweite verstärkt. Im alten Griechenland wurde er Teil des klassischen Pentathlons und seit einigen Jahren auch hier beim BOINC Pentathlon.

Heute geht es nicht mehr darum, sich gegen Bären oder große Katzen zu verteidigen. Auch Mammute zu erlegen ist heute etwas schwierig geworden. Dennoch gibt es Parallelen. Geschicklichkeit, Kraft und Schnelligkeit sind genauso wichtig wie damals. Zum richtigen Zeitpunkt die genau richtige Kraft einzusetzen ist heute wie damals entscheidend.

Speerwerfen (SRBase: alle Subprojekte außer TF)
Der erste Wurf steht heute an. Das wahre Potenzial werden wir aber erst nach dem dritten Versuch sehen. Bis dahin können wir super analysieren und spekulieren. Aktuell sieht es stark danach aus, dass viele Teams den ersten Versuch auslassen, noch ist der Tag aber nicht rum.

Zumindest P3D hat ein Ausrufezeichen gesetzt und einen ernsthaften Versuch gewagt. Doch schon die aktuellen Versuche von CNT (#2) und B@P (#3) lassen erahnen, dass hier noch viel Luft nach oben ist.

Den ersten Versuch ernst genommen haben auch die Meisterkühler (#4), das sieht doch schon ganz gut aus. TAAT (#5) scheint auszulassen, was bei EVGA (#6) und BOINC.Italy (#7) noch abzuwarten ist. Beide sind durchaus solide unterwegs. Dahinter lassen AF (#8) und RKN (#9) vermuten, dass hier noch gepokert wird. Beide Teams können mehr als sie bisher zeigen.

Wo ich TSBT (#10) einordnen muss, kann ich noch nicht sagen. Ist der aktuelle Stand gut oder nicht gut? Wir werden es sehen. AMD Users (#11) und BC (#12) profitieren auch noch davon, dass Teams wie SG (#13) noch nicht alles zeigen.

Während Crystal Dream (#14) noch ganz gut unterwegs ist, haben LTT (#15), OCN (#16), TC (#17) und [H] (#18) noch viel Luft nach oben. Sie sehen, sehr geehrte Leser, hier wird sich noch sehr viel bewegen.

UBT (#19), Russia (#20), TFFE (#21) und BS (#22) müssen dagegen schon aufpassen, den Anschluss nicht zu verlieren. Auf #23 rangiert noch SUSA, was auch darauf hindeutet, dass hier heute ausgelassen wird. Das scheint auch auf alle anderen folgenden Teams zuzutreffen.

Während Ukraine (#24) und PiGyS (#25) zumindest Kleinkinder haben werfen lassen, haben 2ch, GPUUG, B^S, LITOMYSL und Chinese Dream scheinbar Speerallergie. Doch jedes einzelne dieser Teams hat das Potenzial, zumindest ins Mittelfeld zu werfen.

Es ist also klar, dass noch gar nichts klar ist. Morgen wissen wir mehr. Einerseits das Ergebnis von heute, andererseits steht morgen schon der zweite Versuch an und da wird sich sicher das eine oder andere Team aus der Deckung wagen.

Gesamtwertung
Da wir nun zwei Disziplinen am Start haben, können wir auch die Gesamtwertung betrachten. Naturgemäß ist sie noch nicht so stark aussageträchtig, doch einen kleinen Blick riskiere ich dennoch.

P3D kann sich zumindest kurzfristig über den Platz an der Sonne freuen, profitiert aber davon, dass TAAT (#2) und SG (#4) beim Speer heute noch nichts Zählbares abgeliefert haben. CNT (#3) ist gut bei beiden Disziplinen unterwegs und somit folgerichtig auf dem Podium.

B@P (ebenfalls #4) wäre wohl am Ende mit dieser Platzierung sehr zufrieden, ebenso wie MK (#6). Auch AF (#7) und RKN (#8) bewegen sich in bekanntem Terrain. [H] (#10) kann mehr, während BOINC.Italy (#11), LTT (#12), EVGA (#13) und AMD Users (#14) sich öfter in der Tabelle begegnen.

Beim Trio dahinter muss zumindest auf dem Papier mit einem Sprung nach vorne gerechnet werden. Inwieweit TC (#14), SUSA (#15) und TSBT (#16) diese Erwartung erfüllen, bleibt noch offen. Es folgen GPUUG (#17), OCN (#18), BC (#19) und die Ukraine auf #20.

Crystal Dream (#21), UBT (#22), TFFE (#23), Russia (#24), LITOMYSL (#24), Chinese Dream (#26), BS (#27), PiGyS (#28), B^S (#29) und 2ch (#30) sind derzeit nur eine Momentaufnahme. Hier sind die Abstände nicht so groß und es kann schnell zu Verschiebungen kommen.

Allerdings wird das heutige Speer-Ergebnis bei den heute auslassenden Teams frühestens erst mit dem vierten Versuch aus der Gesamtwertung entfallen. Das bedeutet für die Konkurrenz, genau hinzuschauen.

Hindernislauf (yoyo@home: nur die Subprojekte ECM, ECM P2)
Wie in meinem Startbericht geschrieben, konzentriere ich mich jeden Tag auf zwei Wertungen. Doch dank unseres fleißigen shka kann ich Ihnen zumindest die Gewinner und Verlierer der letzten Stunden (gestern, 13:00 MESZ, bis heute, 12:00 MESZ) beim Hindernislauf präsentieren.
